Eighth Street

eighth street - archetype new orleans

The Garden District is one of the most distinctive neighborhoods in New Orleans.

Tucked along Eighth Street sits this quintessential shotgun home. Like most homes, its kitchen is the heart of the space—but even the heart sometimes needs renewal.

While the existing layout and circulation suited the owner, the aesthetics fell short. Polished black granite clashed with drab gray cabinetry and beige flooring, leaving the kitchen feeling stark and disconnected. Beneath that surface, however, Archetype recognized real potential: a charming multi-light window, generous ceiling height, and likely original wood floors hidden under the monochrome tile hinted at a warmer, more inviting future.

Custom cabinetry, designed by Archetype and finished in the owner’s curated warm green, now anchors the space with character and depth. A bespoke oak island—combining closed storage with open shelving—introduces both functionality and approachability. Milk glass inserts within the bespoke island pendants catch the light and complement the handcrafted zellige tile backsplash. Unlacquered brass hardware and fittings will continue to evolve over time, developing a natural patina that adds richness and authenticity.

The result is a thoughtfully reimagined kitchen that feels both fresh and timeless, grounded in the home’s historic charm while tailored to modern living.
